今年の冬は最近では珍しく大雪になりました。考えてみると、初めて益子に来た４０年前の冬は沢山の雪が降り、痛いくらいの身を刺す寒さだったのを覚えています。今年は４〜５回ほど雪が降り、日の当たらない所では、何日も雪は残ってました。

Perhaps the winter of 2010 will be remembered by Mashiko residents for the unusual amount of snow that came to this area.   Compared to the the present, the Tochigi Prefecture of forty years ago (when I first arrived from California) was really a lot colder and a lot whiter from December to March.  Nevertheless, somewhat unexpectedly, it snowed here four or five times, and some of it remained for quite awhile in places that are out of reach of direct sunlight.

ある日、夜遅くまで仕事をしていて、ふと外に目を向けると初雪が降ってました。２、３時間の間に結構積もり、雪が止んだ頃、夜空には雲一つなく星が輝いてました。庭は白銀の絨毯を敷いたかのようで、天頂に位置する煌々と輝く満月が、その絨毯を照らしてました。

The first snowfall that we had began late one night, while I happened to still be working.  A lot had fallen within only a few hours, at the end of which the clouds had completely moved on.  I saw our garden completely covered by a soft white blanket, illuminated by the full moon that was directly overhead.

その晩は、とても寒く夜明け前でも雪は溶けずに残ってました。目が覚めて窓の外を見ると、今までに見た事の無い美しい白銀の世界が飛び込んできました。もう二度とこの美しい景色は見れないと思い、急いでカメラを手に早朝の庭へ飛び出しました。空は澄んだ青色で、木々達は雪で覆われ真っ白に雪化粧をされてました。まるで、庭全体に透き通った天蓋を覆ったようです！！

It had been a cold night because the sky was clear, so by dawn none of the snow had melted.  After I awoke I was treated to the most exquisite winter view of our garden that I have ever seen, or probably ever will see.  The color of the morning sky was a perfect blue, and the tree branches, flocked with snow, made the garden appear to be covered by a canopy of glittering crystal!

３月に入り、益子は冬と春の境目にいます。本格的なシーズンになるにはまだまだほんの入り口。でも春は確実にそこまで来てます。

Now that March is here I’m glad to say that we’ve passed the seasonal tipping point in Mashiko. It’s too early to claim that our area has warmed up, but at least it’s getting warmer, and evidence is everywhere that Winter is giving way to Spring.

昼間の時間も少しだけ長さを感じ、私のいつもの散歩コースにも春らしい鮮やかな色が戻りつつあります。 春の訪れを楽しんでいるのは私だけではないみたいですね。

Hours of daylight are noticeably longer. While on my daily walks I can see vibrant color steadily returning to the landscape. I’m not the only one who enjoys the views!

気が早い話ですが、一ヶ月後には淡い桜色の世界、お花見のシーズンです！

Though it’s still a bit too early to think seriously about it, cherry blossom viewing is only about a month away!

１１月の個展も終わり、ホッと一息入れる間も無く、我愛用の古いコンピューターはとうとうブレイクダウンしてしまい、何もかもがストップしてしまいました。１２月に入ってからもこの重大な問題を克服すべく、悪戦苦闘の毎日でした。仕事関係のデータ、今まで撮り貯めていた画像など一瞬にして無くなってしまいました。最終的にはバックアップの中から何とか見つける事が出来ましたが、使える状態にセットアップするまで相当な時間と精神力を有しました。その為、他の用事は後回しにしてコンピューターに就きっきりの毎日。ストレスは最高潮に達してました！

The month of December (’09), the aftermath of my Autumn exhibition, was spent in trying to overcome the disarray that resulted from my old office computer’s serious breakdown.  I was shocked and very worried to see several years’ worth of important information disappear in just the blink of my eye!   In the end most of the lost data was restored to my new computer from backups, but it was a time consuming and stressful process, during which I had very attention to spare for other matters.  Only recently has my anxiety level subsided!

大晦日から年明けの２日まで、私は妻と友人４人で日光のずっと奥のお気に入りの温泉地へ１年のストレスを取りに旅行に出かけました。鬼怒川の元、女夫淵から出発。膝ほどに積もった雪、止む気配すら感じない雪が降りしきる中、３時間を温泉地目指して歩きました。そして日光澤温泉にクタクタになりながら到着したのです。周りには大自然と雪だけで、寝る、美味しい物を食う、温泉に入る、音も無くシンシンと降る雪を眺めるの繰り返しでしたが、今までで１番思い出深い年末年始を過ごす事が出来ました。

On December 31, my wife and I, along with four friends, traveled to the Nikko mountain area to spend New Years at our favorite spa.  We hiked for three hours along the Kinu River, through knee deep snow in the midst of a blizzard before arriving at Nikkozawa Hot Spring.  We did very little during our stay except sleep, enjoy the hot water and the delicious food, watch the snow fall while wondering if would ever stop (it did not).  Hiking to and from the hot spring was physically exhausting, but we couldn’t have had a better New Year break!

疲れも全部温泉地に捨てて、仕事場へ戻り、１月末までに窯一杯分の陶器を制作する！と自分に約束しました。
１月３０日に、何とか予定通り窯一杯分のものを詰める事が出来ました。小物１つも入らない程です。釉薬をかける前に７００℃まで上げ素焼きをしていきます。今現在は焼き終えて冷ましています。その間、次の仕事の準備をしながら陶房内を片付けました。

I returned to my workshop after our holiday, promising myself that I’d produce a full kilnload of pottery by the end of the month.  By January 30 all ware had been formed, dried, and loaded onto the kiln cart, with no space left for even a single piece!  The kiln is now cooling, having been fired to 700ºC in preparation for glaze application.

今日、突然益子へは初めていらしたと言う素敵なご夫婦がお見えになり、焚き火を囲みお茶を飲みながら楽しい時間を過ごしました。

While firing my kiln I cleaned my workshop, and shared tea with a very pleasant couple who visited Mashiko for the first time.

やっと、普段通りの生活に戻り、現在安堵している所です。

久しぶりに、ブログ更新です。我が家のMr.パソコンが動かなくなってしまい修理不能状態でした。

今年も色々ありました！去年のリーマンショックから始まり、今年にかけて少なからずも益子にも不景気の波が押し寄せてきました‥。

そんな中、ハービヤング作陶４０周年記念展を１１月に開催し、沢山のお客様に足をお運びいただきました！！

沢山の新作をお客様にご案内できた事に満足しております。本当に有り難うございました。

そんな中、一番嬉しかった事はこのブログをご覧頂いて栃木県さくら市までお出まし頂いた事です。

明日の大晦日から、年明けて２日まで今年の疲れを取りに奥鬼怒の日光沢温泉に出かけてきます。

今の時期雪が３０センチ積もっており、その温泉宿まで行くのは、雪山を２時間半かけて歩きます。

身も心もリフレッシュし新年より良い作品を制作していきたいと思っております。

私は、さくら市にある２００９年鐵竹堂瀧澤記念館での作陶展で２００点の作品を展示すると約束しました。
しかし、作陶展作品の搬入日が私の頭の中にセットされると、作品を作る私の気持ちはその１秒でも時間が許す限り止める事ができません。
私の妻は、よく『早めに仕上げてください！』と言いますが、そのアドバイス通りに中々いきません。
只今、開催中の鐵竹堂瀧澤記念館では３４０点ほど展示しており、その一部分をお見せします。
もし、お時間とこの作品をご覧になる興味がありましたら、お越しいただけると私はとても嬉しく思います！

I promised to bring about 200 pieces to my 2009 Exhibition at Takizawa Techikudou Kinenkaikan in Sakura City. But once an exhibition deadline is set in my mind, I can’t stop working until the last second of production time has been used up! My wife often suggests that I should finish early, but her advice is never heeded!

栃木県の北部にさくら市がありそこに鐵竹堂瀧澤記念館があります。さくら市からは、日光のシンボル男体山とその横には那須連山がよく見えます。
Tetchikudou Takizawa Kinenkan is located in Sakura City, Northern Tochigi Prefecture.  From Sakura City, Mount Nantai in Nikko National Park and the Nasu Highlands can been seen in their respective mountain areas.

鐵竹堂瀧澤記念館は1892年に明治天皇の行在所として建てられました。この建物は栃木県指定文化財となっております。この由緒ある建物を代々守っておられる瀧澤様は1995年に開館を決意いたしました。
この贅を尽くした建物と庭は当時のままの状態で保存されており、現在この建物は個展や文化イベントなどで使用されております。

In 1892, Techikudou was built as a rest house for use by Japan’s Meiji Emperor.  It is now designated as a Cultural Property of Tochigi Prefecture.  The original owners, the Takizawa Family, re-opened the building in 1995.  The exquisite structure and its garden have been well preserved, and are now used as a venue for art exhibitions and other cultural events.

2009年鐵竹堂瀧澤記念館での作陶展は、初めて益子の地に足を踏み入れてから現在に至るまでの作陶生活40周年という記念すべき年に行う展覧会です。日本は私に沢山の力をくれた国で、これまで培って来た私の作品の全てを支えてくれた友達やお客様に観ていただけたら私は幸せに思います。

My 2009 exhibition at Techikudou will celebrate a forty year association with the Pottery Town called Mashiko.  Japan has indeed been very good to me, so by displaying my work at Techikudou, it’s my intention to show my friends what I have accomplished since arriving in this country.

２００９年、９月１９日（新月）から１０月４日（満月）の１６日間に渡って益子初のアースフェスタが開催されます。

Mashiko’s first Earth Art Festa will take place from September 19 (New Moon) until October 4 (Full Moon).

今回のこのイベントは益子として今までに無い企画です。このイベントを盛り上げる為に沢山の益子町民の方達がボランティアで頑張ってます。

A new approach has been taken in the planning of this event, and a lot of volunteer effort on the part of Mashiko’s residents has gone into all aspects of its preparation.

この会場に訪れたお客様は、今までと違った角度から益子町を見る事が出来ます。訪れた全てのお客様は必ず面白いと感じ楽しんでもらえる事でしょう。

It is hoped that all visitors to Earth Art Festa 2009 will experience our town in quite a new way.  We expect that there will be something of interest and enjoyment for everyone!

この１６日間のメイン会場は益子町の中心地になり、かなり賑やかになると思います。それでも、少し離れると昔ながらの田舎町益子の静かな場所は沢山残ってます。時間を感じさせない美しい場所にも訪れて欲しいのです。

During the event, there may be lots of people in the main areas of activity; but there will also be many quiet places to which our visitors can go to appreciate the timeless beauty of our rural community.

ここに紹介する、斜森博行氏は下関在住のステンドグラスアーティストで、20年以上前から作家仲間です。彼が持って生まれたデザインセンスは奥が深く、その手から出来上がる作品はバラエティに富んでおり、私が尊敬している作家の一人です。

Mr. Hiroyuki Nanamori, a friend for more than twenty years, is a stained glass artist who lives and works in Shimonoseki, Japan.  His innate design sense is reflected in the large variety of work that he produces, and I’ve always admired him for his talent.

数年前から、私たちは陶器とステンドグラスのコラボレーション作品制作を開始し、今までの作品数は20個以上にのぼります。

私たちの仕事の進め方はとても簡単で、私はランプの金具やコードを付けられるようデザインした陶器ベースを制作し、出来上がったベースを約900km離れた斜森氏のスタジオアンビエントに送ります。
彼は出来上がったベースを目の前に置き、イメージを膨らませながら、それに合うガラスを選んでカットした破片をつなぎ合わせて行きます。

Several years ago, Hiroyuki and I began working together to produce ceramic and stained glass lamps.  To date we have collaborated on more than twenty pieces!

Our way of working together is quite simple:  I make stoneware bases, all of which are designed to accept lamp fittings.   After they have been fired, they are sent to his studio in Shimonoseki, 900 kilometers from Mashiko.

Hiroyuki has my base before his eyes when he chooses from his large inventory of colored glass.   He cuts each piece by hand and fits them together in a pattern of his design.

山口県下関の海岸通りには唐戸市場という魚市場があり、そこから少し離れた所に斜森氏の工房、スタジオアンビエントがあります。残念ながら私の住まいには海が無く、海の香りを感じることが出来ないので彼の環境は羨ましく思います。

Hiroyuki Nanamori’s  AMBIENT STUDIO is only a few minutes walk from Shimonoseki’s waterfront, and the fascinating Karato Wholesale Fish Market.  I’m very envious of my friend, because living in a landlocked area, I can’t smell the sea!

コーヒーカップを制作する事が多いので、寝ても覚めてもカップの事が頭から離れません！

I make so many coffee cups that I even see them in my dreams!

温度と、煙の調子を十分に気を付けないと、熱を通し過ぎて乾いてしまうか、食材の中は生になるか、難しいところです。その間私の陶芸の仕事は、この薫製の為に一時中断します。

薫製の風味は好きな方がほとんどだと思います。勿論、私もその一人です。私に趣味を持ちなさいとアドバイスしてくれた友人にソーセージをプレゼントしたいです。

If I don’t pay close attention to the cooking temperature and the smoke level, the food will be undercooked or too dry, under or over-smoked. So when I’m cooking, almost everything has to stop in the workshop.

The taste of smoked food is irresistible to many people, including myself. I wish my friend would visit me again! I’d thank her for her advice, and offer her a sausage!

Perhaps at times I go too far with some of my hobbies!

益子町は１年のうち約８ヶ月間、アウトドアーに適した良い気候です。
家の庭で友人達と過ごすと日本の田舎を感じるのではなく、カリフォルニアのキャンプグラウンドを思います。暑い日でも庭にある高い木が日陰を作るので涼しく過ごせます。一番大きな山桜の木の下には、地中に埋め込んだどっしりとしたピクニックテーブルがあります。そこでお互いに用意した沢山の食べ物とリラックスな時間を共有します。

Eight months of the year, Mashiko is warm enough to enjoy one’s self outdoors.  When we are relaxing in our garden, I can easily imagine myself as being in some California campground instead of at my home in rural Japan.   The trees provide cool shade when the temperature climbs.  Under the biggest one of all, a Mountain Cherry, is a large picnic table, the legs of which are embedded in the ground.   It’s there that we and our friends have had many enjoyable meals, often contributed to in some fine way by every person in attendance.

私は何種類かのスモーク料理、チキンや魚、ソーセージを、勿論私の手作り食器に盛りつけ提供します！

My input is usually some hot-smoked dish, such as chicken, fish, or sausage…also, of course, my tableware!
