Heartfelt thanks to those who came to our third Autumn Home Exhibition 2010!

I’m very happy to have made acquaintance during our event with first time visitors to my workshop, and I’m equally as appreciative to friends who have supported us on prior occasions!

今年で三回目になる外庭でのイベント、開催前には必ず同じ事が心配になります。それは会期中のお天気です。この時期になると１日に１５回以上天気予報をチェックします。通常１１月は雨の日が少なく快晴の日が多いのが常ですが、残念な事に今回はお天気に恵まれませんでした。ある日は朝から土砂降りの雨、気分は最悪でした。それでも嬉しい事に、雨の降らない日は常にお客様はお越し下さいました。

As usually happens before our outdoor events, we must have checked the weather reports fifteen times every day, hoping for clear skies. On the whole it was more cloudy than was to be expected for November, and on one frustrating day, rain fell from morning to night! But as long as it stayed dry, there was no time when guests were not present!

今回のイベントを開催するにあたり、イベントまでの少ない日数にも関わらず普段よりも倍以上作品を制作しました。デザインや、釉薬として、お客様に沢山の作品を紹介したくベストを尽くしました。イベント初日（２０日）の夜に最後の窯出しを行いました。今回イベントの為に２回の窯焚きをしましたが、最後の頃は精神的、肉体的に限界を超えておりとてもキツイ状態でした。しかしそんな中の窯焚きの結果は予想以上に質の高い物が沢山出たのです。今回の状況で思った事は、何事も根気よく、粘り強く行えば必ず報われるという事です。

I produced almost twice as much ware than usual in the amount of time available to me before the event began. I took some chances with forms and glazes, hoping to show our guests something new. My last kiln load of pottery was unloaded in the evening of the first day. Toward the end of production, I was physically and mentally fatigued, and the two firings that I did were difficult, but the quality of the ware that came out of my kiln was extraordinary, in my opinion. It would seem that sometimes persistence brings rewards.

イベントの準備に追われ、その他の仕事がそのまま残っておりますが、２０１０年の大きな仕事は基本的に終わりました。今の私は解放され、今まで出来なかった寝坊、好きな読書、そして妻とゆっくりとした時間を過ごす事が出来ます。

そして、年末までに（a)海釣り(b)オートバイの修理が出来る事を願っている毎日です。

My work for 2010 is essentially finished, except for the long neglected errands that I must now attend to. For now at least, I can catch up on lost sleep, do some reading, and spend some quality time with my wife.

Before the end of this year I’ll be very grateful if I can (a) do some ocean fishing and (b)begin restoring my motorcycle!

イベント出品作品 MORE WARE

４月２２日の悪天候の中、フジテレビの取材スタッフがやってきました。
ゴールデンウィーク中に益子町最大のイベント陶器市が開催される前に、益子町の案内をするのが目的との事です。
残念ながら、ヤング陶房では陶器市には出品しておりません。
しかし、ゴールデンウィーク中は、陶房全面開放して美味しいお茶と共に皆様のお越しをお待ちしております！！
２９日には、窯出しの予定です。一人でも多くのお客様に見て頂ければと思います。
お越しの際は、電話連絡頂けると有り難いです。
窯出しの様子はまた後ほどブログにて！！

テレビを通してのハービーヤングは少し老けて？映ってましたが、実際は、日本を心から愛する若い？ナイスガイです（笑）

１１月の個展も終わり、ホッと一息入れる間も無く、我愛用の古いコンピューターはとうとうブレイクダウンしてしまい、何もかもがストップしてしまいました。１２月に入ってからもこの重大な問題を克服すべく、悪戦苦闘の毎日でした。仕事関係のデータ、今まで撮り貯めていた画像など一瞬にして無くなってしまいました。最終的にはバックアップの中から何とか見つける事が出来ましたが、使える状態にセットアップするまで相当な時間と精神力を有しました。その為、他の用事は後回しにしてコンピューターに就きっきりの毎日。ストレスは最高潮に達してました！

The month of December (’09), the aftermath of my Autumn exhibition, was spent in trying to overcome the disarray that resulted from my old office computer’s serious breakdown.  I was shocked and very worried to see several years’ worth of important information disappear in just the blink of my eye!   In the end most of the lost data was restored to my new computer from backups, but it was a time consuming and stressful process, during which I had very attention to spare for other matters.  Only recently has my anxiety level subsided!

大晦日から年明けの２日まで、私は妻と友人４人で日光のずっと奥のお気に入りの温泉地へ１年のストレスを取りに旅行に出かけました。鬼怒川の元、女夫淵から出発。膝ほどに積もった雪、止む気配すら感じない雪が降りしきる中、３時間を温泉地目指して歩きました。そして日光澤温泉にクタクタになりながら到着したのです。周りには大自然と雪だけで、寝る、美味しい物を食う、温泉に入る、音も無くシンシンと降る雪を眺めるの繰り返しでしたが、今までで１番思い出深い年末年始を過ごす事が出来ました。

On December 31, my wife and I, along with four friends, traveled to the Nikko mountain area to spend New Years at our favorite spa.  We hiked for three hours along the Kinu River, through knee deep snow in the midst of a blizzard before arriving at Nikkozawa Hot Spring.  We did very little during our stay except sleep, enjoy the hot water and the delicious food, watch the snow fall while wondering if would ever stop (it did not).  Hiking to and from the hot spring was physically exhausting, but we couldn’t have had a better New Year break!

疲れも全部温泉地に捨てて、仕事場へ戻り、１月末までに窯一杯分の陶器を制作する！と自分に約束しました。
１月３０日に、何とか予定通り窯一杯分のものを詰める事が出来ました。小物１つも入らない程です。釉薬をかける前に７００℃まで上げ素焼きをしていきます。今現在は焼き終えて冷ましています。その間、次の仕事の準備をしながら陶房内を片付けました。

I returned to my workshop after our holiday, promising myself that I’d produce a full kilnload of pottery by the end of the month.  By January 30 all ware had been formed, dried, and loaded onto the kiln cart, with no space left for even a single piece!  The kiln is now cooling, having been fired to 700ºC in preparation for glaze application.

今日、突然益子へは初めていらしたと言う素敵なご夫婦がお見えになり、焚き火を囲みお茶を飲みながら楽しい時間を過ごしました。

While firing my kiln I cleaned my workshop, and shared tea with a very pleasant couple who visited Mashiko for the first time.

やっと、普段通りの生活に戻り、現在安堵している所です。

I’m very happy to have returned to my normal routine!

ここに紹介する、斜森博行氏は下関在住のステンドグラスアーティストで、20年以上前から作家仲間です。彼が持って生まれたデザインセンスは奥が深く、その手から出来上がる作品はバラエティに富んでおり、私が尊敬している作家の一人です。

Mr. Hiroyuki Nanamori, a friend for more than twenty years, is a stained glass artist who lives and works in Shimonoseki, Japan.  His innate design sense is reflected in the large variety of work that he produces, and I’ve always admired him for his talent.

数年前から、私たちは陶器とステンドグラスのコラボレーション作品制作を開始し、今までの作品数は20個以上にのぼります。

私たちの仕事の進め方はとても簡単で、私はランプの金具やコードを付けられるようデザインした陶器ベースを制作し、出来上がったベースを約900km離れた斜森氏のスタジオアンビエントに送ります。
彼は出来上がったベースを目の前に置き、イメージを膨らませながら、それに合うガラスを選んでカットした破片をつなぎ合わせて行きます。

Several years ago, Hiroyuki and I began working together to produce ceramic and stained glass lamps.  To date we have collaborated on more than twenty pieces!

Our way of working together is quite simple:  I make stoneware bases, all of which are designed to accept lamp fittings.   After they have been fired, they are sent to his studio in Shimonoseki, 900 kilometers from Mashiko.

Hiroyuki has my base before his eyes when he chooses from his large inventory of colored glass.   He cuts each piece by hand and fits them together in a pattern of his design.

山口県下関の海岸通りには唐戸市場という魚市場があり、そこから少し離れた所に斜森氏の工房、スタジオアンビエントがあります。残念ながら私の住まいには海が無く、海の香りを感じることが出来ないので彼の環境は羨ましく思います。

Hiroyuki Nanamori’s  AMBIENT STUDIO is only a few minutes walk from Shimonoseki’s waterfront, and the fascinating Karato Wholesale Fish Market.  I’m very envious of my friend, because living in a landlocked area, I can’t smell the sea!

コーヒーカップを制作する事が多いので、寝ても覚めてもカップの事が頭から離れません！

I make so many coffee cups that I even see them in my dreams!

温度と、煙の調子を十分に気を付けないと、熱を通し過ぎて乾いてしまうか、食材の中は生になるか、難しいところです。その間私の陶芸の仕事は、この薫製の為に一時中断します。

薫製の風味は好きな方がほとんどだと思います。勿論、私もその一人です。私に趣味を持ちなさいとアドバイスしてくれた友人にソーセージをプレゼントしたいです。

If I don’t pay close attention to the cooking temperature and the smoke level, the food will be undercooked or too dry, under or over-smoked. So when I’m cooking, almost everything has to stop in the workshop.

The taste of smoked food is irresistible to many people, including myself. I wish my friend would visit me again! I’d thank her for her advice, and offer her a sausage!

時々、この趣味は度が過ぎる時もあります！
Perhaps at times I go too far with some of my hobbies!

益子町は１年のうち約８ヶ月間、アウトドアーに適した良い気候です。
家の庭で友人達と過ごすと日本の田舎を感じるのではなく、カリフォルニアのキャンプグラウンドを思います。暑い日でも庭にある高い木が日陰を作るので涼しく過ごせます。一番大きな山桜の木の下には、地中に埋め込んだどっしりとしたピクニックテーブルがあります。そこでお互いに用意した沢山の食べ物とリラックスな時間を共有します。

Eight months of the year, Mashiko is warm enough to enjoy one’s self outdoors.  When we are relaxing in our garden, I can easily imagine myself as being in some California campground instead of at my home in rural Japan.   The trees provide cool shade when the temperature climbs.  Under the biggest one of all, a Mountain Cherry, is a large picnic table, the legs of which are embedded in the ground.   It’s there that we and our friends have had many enjoyable meals, often contributed to in some fine way by every person in attendance.

私は何種類かのスモーク料理、チキンや魚、ソーセージを、勿論私の手作り食器に盛りつけ提供します！

My input is usually some hot-smoked dish, such as chicken, fish, or sausage…also, of course, my tableware!

何年か前に、ハービヤング陶房を軌道にのせる為に私はがむしゃらに働き、かなりオーバーワーク状態でした。その様子を頻繁に見ていた友人は厳しい顔で見るに耐えかね、“あなたは仕事以外に趣味がないと良い芸術家になれない！”とアドバイスをくれました。

その時の私の状態を考えると、彼女のアドバイスは今思えばとても良かったと思います。50年以上粘土を触る経験がある今でもこの仕事はチャレンジと緊張の連続です。でもその状態をずっと続ける事は大変難しく、たまに気分転換をしないと飽きてしまいます。それで料理をする事にしました。

私は料理人ではなく（高級なメニュー紹介や自分が食したメニューを紹介等はしません）しかし、本やサイトなどで気に入ったメニューを溜めておき、妻や、友人に私の腕前を披露します！

Many years ago, when I was trying very hard to establish myself as a potter in Mashiko, a friend became tired of seeing me constantly overwork. Showing me a stern face, she gave me the following advice: “You can’t be a good artist if you don’t have any hobbies!”

Her suggestion proved true as far as I am personally concerned. I have been touching clay for more than fifty years, and my work is still an interesting challenge; but I admit to tiring of it unless I occasionally take time off for doing something different. For that reason among others, awhile back I started cooking, mainly for the fun of it.

I’m no chef (so I don’t intend to recommend any scrumptious menus or give regular reports on What I Ate), but I have managed to collect a lot of recipes from books and the net, so when time allows, I try many of them out on my wife and friends!

我が家で使っている食器棚の中は、30年使っている物もあります!
その棚の中には私が制作した物や、友達の作品などがほとんどです。
初めて訪れるお客様は、器を制作している私は日常生活でどんな食器を使っているのか興味があるようで、食器棚を見させてください!とよくお願いされます。

Much of the ware in this cabinet has been in constant use for more than thirty years!

Most of it was made by me, and much of the rest was done by friends.

Guests who enter our home for the first time are sometimes curious to know what kinds of ware the potter himself uses, so they ask us to let them look into our cupboard!

５月にしては涼しい朝に、今シーズン最後の焚火をしました！
