庭から見た月、最大月食午後11時18分。

私の知る日本人は、大きな困難という壁が前を塞いでいても起き上がる力を持っていると思う。３月１１日、大震災のダメージは計り知れない規模であったが確実に復興の色は見え始めている。震災によるダメージが一番大きかった東北にはまだまだ大きな苦労を抱えながら生活を余儀なくされている方達がいます。震源地に近い所に住んでいた方達は簡単に過去の事だ、とは言えない状況が続いているのです。元の生活に戻れる補償もはっきりしないままそれでも尚、生活は続けなければならず膨大な資金、労働、忍耐が必要なのです。

Owing to the resilience of the Japanese people, much progress has been made to undo the damage caused by The Great Earthquake of March 11, 2011.   For so many residents in the most strongly affected areas, however, the effects of the tragedy are still painfully present.  A lot of time, money, physical effort and patience are the minimum requirements to make the catastrophe a thing of the past in the minds of the people living in the Tohoku region, nearest to the earthquake epicenter.

被害の酷かった地区の一つに宮城県の気仙沼があります。この地は漁港として日本ではその名が知られており日本の食を支えている所です。しかし震災後の大津波により大きなダメージを受けました。港の形が変わったほどでした。停泊していた漁船の燃料は引火して何日も暗い空の日が続いたのです。そして港を取り巻く漁港関係のビジネス諸共、津波は飲み込んでいったのです。

One location most known for having incurred terrible damage is Kesennuma, in Miyagi Prefecture.  The tidal wave that followed the earthquake flattened the seaport, and in fact changed its topography! Fuel for the fishing boats ignited, and smoke blackened the sky for four days.  Besides the loss of many fishing boats, many of the facilities that support the fishing industry were swept away.

しばらく前に、私の友人は気仙沼で作られたハンモックをプレゼントしてくれました。気仙沼の漁師さんは大変なご苦労をされ、震災前のような仕事もできず収入源も不安定な状態です。漁師の方達は負けじとアイデアを出し、漁にはかかせない魚を獲る網を編む技術を生かして丈夫なハンモックを作りあげ、販売し収入源にしているそうです。そして一日でも早く海に戻れるよう、ハンモックを売り収入に繋がるよう頑張っているそうです。

A few weeks ago a friend presented me with a nylon hammock, made in Kesennuma.  I was told that until the area’s fishing industry becomes functional again, the fishermen have almost no work or independent means of income.  As a stopgap measure, many of them are now applying their skill in weaving fishing net toward producing strong hammocks.  Sales from these products will help them survive until they can return to the sea.

気仙沼漁師のハンモックは乗るととても心地よく、体のラインに沿うようになってます。しっかりと編み込んであるので、丈夫で長く楽しめると思います。ハンモックを楽しむ為には４〜５m開いた両側に木か柱が必要です。

Kasennuma hammocks are comfortable, and conform to the shape of the body as soon as they are gotten into.   They will last many years if treated with care.  They need a four to five meter space between two strong posts or trees for hanging.

Unfortunately, the person in Kesennuma in charge of sales does not understand English, and for various other reasons it’s probably not practical to order this product from overseas.  Nevertheless, I very much hope that the Japanese version of this blog entry will bring some much needed support to the fishermen of Kesennuma.

アケビ     Akebi  (Chocolate Vine)

アケビは韓国と日本、中国に古来からある植物です。中の白い部分の実は種がぎっしりで甘く果物として、紫色の奇麗な外皮は煮たり、天ぷらなど野菜として食されています。アケビのつるはとても強く、手持ちカゴやバスケット、ティーポットの取っ手としても使われてます。

Akebia trifoliata is native to China, Korea and Japan.
The interior seed sack is sweet, so it’s eaten raw as a fruit, but the fleshy outer cover can be fried or simmered like a vegetable.
The akebi vine is very strong after it has been dried, and is often used to make durable baskets and teapot handles.

夏から秋に変わるこの季節は台風の季節でもあります。今まで今回のようにドラマティックな季節の移り変わりを経験した事は一度もないと思います。
It’s the typhoon season, which coincides with the change from summer into fall.  Never in my memory has transition to autumn been as dramatic as it was this year.

日本の場合台風は南海上で発生し少しずつ北上していき、南に住んでいる人達はまだ発生間もない台風の影響をもろに受ける事になります。通常、東京くらいの緯度に進む前に急激に勢力は弱くなり東よりに進路を変えて、太平洋の台風の進路上に浮かんでいる不運な船以外は大きな被害にはなりません。
In Japan, it’s usually the people living in the southernmost areas who have the most to fear from these tropical cyclones as they move northward.  By the time the storms reach approximately the same latitude as Tokyo, they have usually expended most of their strength and have veered eastward toward the central Pacific ocean, where they can cause little harm except to unlucky ships that are out at sea.

今回の台風１５号（ニックネーム　“ロケ”）は勢力が弱くならないまま関東に接近してきました。コースは北東、そして本州のど真ん中を通りました。豪雨と強風を保ちながら益子町の真上を通過していきました。他の地方では１６名が犠牲となりました。しかし、私の知る限り益子地区は収穫前の稲や木々が倒され、枝から大量の葉が落ちただけでした。
This typhoon, nicknamed Roke, was extraordinary in terms of its strength and longevity.  It traveled in a northeasterly direction, the path of which carried it squarely up the center of much of Honshu.  This typhoon passed directly over Mashiko, carrying rain and dangerously high winds.
About sixteen people lost their lives in other areas during this storm, but so far as I know, in Mashiko nothing happened except for toppled rice plants, fallen trees and branches, and leaves strewn everywhere.

私たちの地域は夕方頃が一番のピークでした。夜の間聞こえるのは、強風で木と木がこすれる音と豪雨が屋根に叩き付ける音でした。その結果私達の庭はめちゃくちゃになり、強い風と雨の影響で外にあったコンパネはボロ布のようになっていました。
In our area the weather was the most intense in the late afternoon.  All night we heard the sound of heavy rain, and the wind hissing as it passed through our large trees, making a mess of our garden.  A piece of plywood I had left outside was completely shredded by the wind and water.

夜が明ける前に台風は過ぎ去りました。そして庭には虫の音が響いてました。空には青空が戻り、白く輝く三日月が見えました。
By dawn the storm had passed, and in our garden the insects that are active at this time of year were chirping away as usual.  The sky had begun to clear, revealing a bright crescent moon.

早朝に近くの小貝川へ様子を見に行きました。昨夜の豪雨で普段より水位が上昇し川幅が広くなってました。しかし、これでも台風が過ぎた時点で水位は下がったようです。私が写真を撮りに行った時は、まだ水位は高いレベルで流れは濁流と化してました。
In the morning I drove to the local river, Kokaigawa.   During the night it had risen above its normal storm levels, but receded somewhat as Roke moved on.   By the time I was there to photograph it, it was still higher than usual, and the current was still impressively strong.

台風１５号（ロケ）は夏も一緒に連れ去ったようです。太陽の光は秋の日差しに変わったのです。でも暦の上では秋なので当たり前ですね！
As Roke blew away, it seems as if it took Summer with it.  The quality of light is different now, more like that of autumn.   But of course that is the season we’re now officially in!

３月１１日以来、私達の主な仕事は散乱した物を少しずつ片付ける事でした。まずオフィスワークスペースと居住空間の片付けから始まり、徐々に範囲を広げて行きました。めちゃくちゃに散乱した道具類や、瓦礫と化した物を一つ一つ拾っては使えるものと使えないものを慎重にチェックする地道な作業が続きました。
Picking up fallen objects has of course been one of the main tasks that Yukie and I have had to attend to in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake.  We started at the far end of our workshop building, where my office and our temporary living space are located.  We went on from room to room, looking closely with a cool eye at almost every object, to decide if it could or should be repaired, or if it should be discarded.

最後の片付け場所は最大の難所の窯場。窯場の建物の中には２７年間使用した愛着のあった崩壊した窯の他に石でできた重い棚板が数十枚、釉薬の入ったままの多数のバケツ、棚板をサポートする大小様々のズクが何百個、多くの工具類、捨てるのはもったいないと思いつつ長年そのままにしていた煉瓦、埃だらけの釣り具（亡き祖父の物）そして何年も乗っていない愛車のオートバイが２台あります。そして窯場の片付けを始めて２日後には崩れた窯だけになっていました。
The last room to be cleaned up was the kiln shed.  Contained within, besides my poor destroyed kiln, were refractory shelves, buckets of unused glaze, stacking posts, hand tools, piles of broken bricks that I always hated for some reason to throw away, dusty fishing gear (including a reel that belonged to my grandfather) and two motorcycles that had been covered with tarps for years.  After two days, almost everything was removed from the shed except for the remains of my kiln.

鉄製の枠にロットで締められた２８２個の煉瓦の天井の総重量は約５００㎏あります。崩れた窯の一番上にはその５００㎏が乗っておりとても不安定な状態です。なるべく使える煉瓦を温存するため注意を払って解体しなくてはなりません。まず崩れた窯の中にある煉瓦を拾わなければならず、長い棒状の物を使い手繰り寄せて行きます。あの５００㎏の下に入り込んで煉瓦を拾うにはかなりの度胸が必要であり、作業中に天井が落ちたら虫のごとく潰されるのは誰が見ても想像がつく事でしょう。
The flat roof, made of 282 firebrick, bound together with steel rod, weighed about 500 kilo, or 1100 lbs.  It sat precariously on three nearly collapsed walls.  I used a broom on a long stick to pull the fallen bricks out from inside the kiln.  Anyone might easily understand my hesitation to step under that roof.  If it came down on me I would have been squashed like a bug.

近所には適任の職人さんがおり、とても有り難い事にダンプカーに沢山の道具類を積んで快く手伝いに来てくれました。その本格的な道具の山を見て心強く、またうらやましく思いました。彼の手際の良さに驚き、あっという間にその５００㎏の天井は４つのチェーンブロックによって吊り上げられました。その間に、今にも崩れそうな壁を一つずつ取り除き、そして２７年ぶりに天井は地上に置かれ全てバラされました。これで使える煉瓦は再建の時にリサイクルする事が出来ます。
One of my neighbors possesses an impressive array of skills and a lot of big toys.  Thankfully, he came to my kiln shed with his dump truck, four chain blocks, and an assortment of hand tools that I immediately coveted.   Within an amazingly short period of time he had that heavy kiln roof suspended under the steel rafters of the shed.  Following the safe removal of the wall bricks, the roof returned to earth for the first time in twenty-seven years, and was disassembled.  The bricks that are unbroken will be recycled when I build my next kiln.

私たちの大きな木は今年もまた、何千匹もの夏の虫達の住処になってます。
Our large trees are once again the hangout for uncountable thousands of summer insects.

緑の多い所に住んでいる人たちは、今の季節は何だろう？とカレンダーを見る必要はありません。外に出て、周りの植物を調べたら分かるでしょう。
People who live in green areas don’t have to look at a calendar to determine what season it is.  All they have to do is step outside and observe what is happening to the flora.

私たちの庭の一番大きいsummer-insectsは、そこを住処としている虫達の餌、サラダになってます。少しだけ枝を見ると夏のピークはそろそろ過ぎ、秋の入り口は近いようです。

The leaves of our largest mountain cherry tree have become salad for most of the insects that reside on it.  One glance up into the branches is enough to conclude that summer is nearing its downside, and fall isn’t too far away.

我が家の庭には４本の夏椿があります。私は日本の温かい季節の代表的な植物として夏椿を一番に思います。ブログの画像の夏椿の花を見たら、虫たちの賑やかな鳴き声と、風鈴の涼しげな音を想像してみて下さい！

We have four Summer Camellia trees, known in Japan as Natsu-tsubaki, in our garden.  For me they are the epitome of the warm season in Japan.  When you look at this picture, please try to imagine the hissing sound of summer insects, and the soft ring of a wind chime!

幹とそこから伸びた細い枝、木の皮はデリケートなくらいに薄く古い皮は自然と剥げ落ちて、その下の落ち着いた質感を見ていると官能的な感覚になります。

The trunk and branches of this tree are sensual, owing to their shape and the subtle colors of the thin, exfoliating bark.

夏椿は沢山の花を咲かせます。しかし、綺麗で整った庭を好む方は花が落ちた芝生を見ると不快な気持ちになるでしょう。夏椿がある庭にお住まいの方は、木のそばに掃除用具を常に置いておく事をお勧めいたします。

Natsu-tsubaki blossoms prolifically, but people who like their gardens tidy may be slightly annoyed at seeing their lawns continuously littered with fallen flowers.  If you have grass under your Summer Camellia, it’s probably a good idea to keep a rake stored close-by.

以前から6月の中旬の頃は1年の中で一番楽しみにしている季節です。朝5時にはすでに太陽は高い位置に昇っており、夜7時でも西の空に沈んだ太陽の明るさを感じます。毎年12月の終わりの頃、冬至を過ぎた辺りからこの時期に思いを馳せます。

Mid-June is one time of year that I especially look forward to.  The sun is already up by 5AM, and even past 7PM some light remains in the western sky.  I begin to think about this period as early as late December, when the hours of darkness are at their longest.

残念ながらこの一番素敵な時期に、日本は本格的な梅雨のシーズンです。私達は、この時期の太陽の力強い輝きは知っています。しかし、梅雨空独特のびっしりとはびこった雨雲はいつもあり、昼間の太陽の明るさは少しだけ感じる程度で、周りの景色は何となく鉛色の薄暗い雰囲気です。

Unfortunately, in the same month, the rainy season in Japan is at its peak.  We know the sun is shining mightily, but in June the cloud cover persists, and though the days are long, the sky is gray and the colors of the local landscape are muted.

6月22日は、1年で一番昼間の時間が長い夏至とされていますが、実際はほんの少しだけ夜のほうが長いのです。22日、目が覚める直前に夢を見ていまし た。それは毎年天気の悪い夏至の日なのに、22日の今日は珍しく1日天気が良くて、あなたは今日何か楽しい事をするべきだ！と自分が自分に言っているので す。その日5時に目覚め、夢の通り朝日の強い光が部屋を照らしてました。まもなく妻は起きて、『今日はよい天気！キャンプ行こう！』といきなり言ったので す。あの鮮明な夢を見た後の妻の言葉に、この誘いを断る理由はありませんでした。そうと決まったら、90分の間に急いで朝食を食べ、キャンプ道具を車に詰 め込んで逃げる様に日光方面へと出発しました。

June 22 is only a few seconds short of being the year‘s longest day.   Early that morning, before waking, I had a brief dream in which I told myself that the weather was fine, and we should take advantage of it by indulging in a little recreation.  I opened my eyes at 5:00 to see the morning sun streaming through the window of our little room.  Soon after that my wife also awoke, and said to me “It’s a beautiful day, so let’s go camping!”  After having had that dream, there was no way that I could refuse her proposal.  Within ninety minutes we had finished a quick breakfast, packed our van with our tent and the rest of our gear, and were headed toward the mountains of Nikko.

2時間余りで川の側にある目的地の大きなキャンプ場に到着。水曜日の平日、夏休み前という事もあり広いキャンプ場には私達2人だけで、とても贅沢なシチュエーションだと思いました。沢山あるサイトの中から一番良い場所を選び、私達の大きなテントを早速設置しました。

Less than two hours from leaving home we turned into a large car campground, situated next to a river.  Wednesdays are of course work days for most people, and summer vacation had yet to begin.  We had the entire campground to ourselves, and so we chose the most attractive place amongst hundreds of spots for pitching our large tent.

無事にテント設置を終え、準備を整えて2時間くらい大の字で昼寝をしました。起きてから遅めの昼食を軽く済ませて近くの温泉に行き、のんびりと露天風呂に浸かりました。

The first two hours of our stay at that peaceful spot were spent napping in our  tent.  When we awoke, we had a late and leisurely lunch, then drove a short distance to a hot spring, for an hour’s soak in an outdoor pool.

この24時間の中の出来事は、はっきりと覚えてないほど頭の中が空っぽになり100％リラックスしました。そしてこの素晴らしい1日を過ごして強く言える事は知らない人にでもハグをしたくなるくらい強烈に楽しかった1日でした。

I was so relaxed during those 24 hours that I don’t entirely recall everything that we did, but I do remember being so enraptured from the experiences of the day, so happy to be in Japan, that I felt like hugging even a stranger, any stranger at all!

1日の終わりは急いで用意した食材で美味しいバーベキューです。就寝する前に近くの川へ椅子を置いて川の流れる音を聞いていたら、暗闇の中に一匹の蛍が軽やかに飛んでいるのを見る事ができました。

We finished our day with a delicious barbecue.  Before going to sleep I put my chair next to a small stream, and watched a single firefly flitting in the darkness.

気分転換に思い切って出掛け、満足をした事を帰りの車の中で考えてました。キャンプシーズンはこれからが本番です。あと何回行けるか考えただけでも楽しくなります。

As we returned home I felt extremely satisfied for taking a little time away from our usual routine.   I’m very hopeful that we can go camping a few more times before this year’s season ends.

Down the street from our home a new home is being built for a young family on what was previously a field of mulberry trees.
私達の住まいの直ぐ下側の桑畑跡地には、若いご夫妻ファミリーが家を建てております。

I noticed that the builders paid a lot of attention to constructing an extra strong foundation for this building.  Toward designing this important structural component, perhaps something essential was learned from recent events.
この建物を作る過程でとても頑丈な基礎土台を作っている様子を見る事が出来ました。もしかしたら、先日に起きた震災の影響もあるのか？と思いました。

I watched the owners walk along the truck as it carried the lumber to the construction site.  I felt very good to see the elation on their faces.  They were so engrossed in their joyful experience that they didn’t see me standing along the road.
建設現場に材料を運ぶトラックが通るその側には、オーナー達がその様子を見ていました。その時の彼らの表情はとても得意げで満足そうな笑みを浮かべているのが見て取れ、そんな彼らを見てとても微笑ましく思うのでした。
この経験は彼らにとってとても楽しい事の様で、側に私が居ても気が付かなかったほどでした。

I wish them good luck, and I hope they like animal sounds, because a very loud male pheasant lives in that field, the corner of which their house stands.
私は今後の彼らの生活にエールを送り、そして野生動物の鳴き声が気に入れば良いな、と思いました。なぜならあの場所の近辺には昔から主がおり、それは鳴き声のうるさい雄のpheasant1(キジ鳥）の住処になっているからです。

Even after a natural disaster, life must go on!
大きな自然災害の後でも、こうして生活の営みは続いていくのです！
