その日の昼頃、お客様と庭で楽しくお茶をしてました。そのうち、みるみると雲行きが怪しくなり、遠くでは雷鳴が聞こえてきました。それまで楽しかったお客様とのお茶も名残惜しく、酷くなる前にお帰りになりました。その１０分後には、見た事もない空の色、深緑色になったかと思ったら勢い良く降った雨は真横から吹き付けてきました。私達の庭や建物が壊れそうな位強い風雨、雷に飲み込まれました。奇跡的に大切な蜜蜂の巣箱の蓋が飛ばされた事以外、大きなダメージには至りませんでした。竜巻そのものは目撃しませんでしたが、その脅威は３００m先を破壊しながら通った痕跡をはっきりと残していきました。大きな大木は根元からポキッと折れ、近所のゴルフ場やその近辺の被害は言葉にできないほどです。グリーンの上には壊れたゴルフカートや大量の紙くずと洋服、そしてねじれた鉄板が転がってました。
Ten minutes after some guests left our garden, the sky turned dark green and the rain blew in horizontally!  I thought our garden was going to be decimated, but miraculously, nothing happened to our place except for the cover of my beehive being carried away by the wind (I replaced it).   I did not see the actual vortice, but guessed that IT MISSED US BY LESS THAN ONE THOUSAND FEET as it passed by.  Scores of trees snapped along the twister’s path, and the clubhouse of a nearby golf course was severely damaged.  The green was littered with the remains of disintegrated golf carts, papers, clothing and twisted sheet metal.

その近所に住んでいる陶芸家仲間は、震災で大きな登り窯が崩れて、最近立派な窯が完成したばかりでした。しかし今度の竜巻で家屋が全壊したのです。その日、私の友人は家を空けており、残った奥様が呆然と変わり果てた家屋を眺めてました。新たにできた大きな試練の壁を、乗り越えなければならない現実を受け入れられない感じでした。今回の自然災害は３.１１に比べれば規模は小さいと思いますが、被害を受けられた方々の悲しさは比べられないと思います。
The home of a potter friend, whose large wood burning kiln was flattened last year, and only recently rebuilt, suffered major damage.  On that day my friend was in another part of Japan, hundreds of miles away.  I found his wife standing at the edge of the wreckage, staring at the incredible scene while obviously trying to come to grips with her family’s latest misfortune.
The damage from this hostile act of nature is not nearly as widespread as what resulted from the earthquake of 3/11/11,  but it is no less heartbreaking to think of the plight of the individuals who were affected by this calamity.

私と妻は今回の竜巻被害は運良く免れました。私達の状況をご心配いただいた沢山の方に心より感謝申し上げます。近い将来、私達の住む益子町はこの被害の壁を乗り越え、更に魅力ある町へ再生されることを祈りたいと思います。
My wife and I are grateful to have been spared, and we thank all who have inquired as to our welfare.  We’re hoping with all our might that our town will eventually see better days.

２０世紀から２１世紀の中で人々に大きな影響を与えたアーティストは数多くいると思うが、アメリカの偉大な歌手ボブ ディランはその中の一人だろう。
Bob Dylan is without a doubt one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, and probably the 21st century as well!

１９６２年３月１９日、５０年前の今日は彼のファーストアルバムが登場した記念すべき日である。

On March 19, 1962, fifty years ago today, his first music album was released.

彼の曲を始めて耳にした時『あの変わった声は何だ？』と思った。しかし直ぐに彼のメロディは私の心を大きく膨張させ、体全体はしびれた感覚になった。
The first time I heard it, I thought “what kind of voice is that?”  Then my heart swelled and the rest of my body went numb.

彼の声に出逢ってからそれまでの私の世界観は大きく変わった。一体何が起きたのだろうか？
He changed my world.  How did that happen?

５０年経った今でも、私の頭の中の彼の歌声が消えた日は１日も無いのだ。
Not a day in fifty years has passed without me hearing his music inside my head.

震源地から２９０km離れている所に位置する益子町も、日本そして世界中の温かいご支援に感謝の気持ちを持っております。既にご存知の通りこの町も被災しました。その中でも窯元がとりわけ悲惨でしが、現在は幸運にも大部分は震災前の状態に戻りつつあり、大きな怪我をした人もおりません。そんな中でもこの一年の間、大変な苦労をされた方は窯崩落を余儀なくされた陶芸家だと思います。長い年月をかけて作りためた作品、価値のある作品が無くなり、大切な仕事道具の損傷により仕事に影響した方もいます。それでも世界中には、必要な援助や温かく見守ってくれている人達が沢山いる事を忘れてはならないと思います。
The town of Mashiko, 290km (180mi) from the quake’s epicenter, has a lot to be thankful for.  Damage was widespread, especially to pottery kilns, as is well known by now.   Our town is still standing, though, and remarkably few people were injured.  Many fortunate residents have returned to a normal and routine life.  But arguably, in this area the potters have suffered most, many having lost expensive, indispensable tools and large amounts of inventory, representing many months of work.  Friends all over the world have shown their compassion for the plight of Mashiko potters, generously providing assistance in various forms to those of us who needed it.

私と妻は怪我も無く元気で暮らしている事に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。ゆっくりではありますが、地震による損壊の修理も進んでおり昨年の暮れには住まいに戻る事ができました。いつか粘土をこねる頃、我が陶房は以前より良い環境になっていることを願いながら日々頑張っております。『良い環境』この大きな目標を達成するべく私達は何事にも妥協しないつもりでおります。そして私達にご支援していただきました皆様にこのブログを通じて心から感謝の気持ちをお伝えいたします。
My wife Yukie and I are most grateful for being among those who weren’t injured.  Our buildings are in the process of being repaired, albeit slowly.  Our badly damaged home has been made livable again.  Our intention is to be in a stronger condition than before when we finally resume touching clay.  In regard to this goal we are not willing to compromise.   To everyone who has provided support of any kind, once again we offer our most heartfelt thanks.

新しい窯を築窯するにあたり、窯の図面を約半年かけ制作しました。東日本大震災クラスの地震が来ても崩壊しない窯を制作するのは不可能に近いと思いますが、以前の窯よりも遥かに耐震強度があるもの、ある程度の地震ではビクともしない窯になる予定です。より理想に近いものにする為、インターネットを使い国内外の専門家にアドバイスをいただきました。実際に専門家の方達とは面識はありませんが親切にご教示いただけました。インターネットという媒体がなかったら今回の私のプロジェクトを進める事は困難に等かったでしょう。
I have spent more than a half year designing my next kiln.  Its invulnerability cannot be guaranteed against quakes as strong as last year’s.  My hope, at least, is that it will be better able to withstand the beating it will inevitably receive over time from the many small quakes that occur, seemingly almost every day!  Toward this end I have been given advice from numerous kiln experts, none of whom I have ever met face-to-face.  If the amazing internet didn’t exist, how could we have accomplished so much?

現在、益子町の長い経験を持つ鉄工職人さんは、私達の窯の部品を何十枚の図面を元に制作しております。出来上がるのを心待ちにしながら、私達は新しい窯で使用可能なものを崩れた古い窯のレンガから選びリペア作業をしております。レンガの数はとても多く整理するだけでも大変な作業です。窯制作時、レンガを積み上げる際に隙間なく密着させる必要がある為、古いレンガのモルタルを色々な道具を駆使して綺麗に剥がしていきます。この延々と続く作業、集中力が大切になります。１日の作業が終わる頃、体は冷えて石埃まみれです。季節の変わり目のせいか現在の天気の移り変わりにはついていけません。しかし、数ヶ月前からパソコンに向かう作業を続けていたので、外の作業は気持ちがいいものです。レンガを１個綺麗に仕上げる度に、私の最終目標『作陶活動に戻る日』がレンガ１個分近くなるのです。
Now that the kiln design is finished, a local craftsman is fabricating the hardware needed for its construction.  While waiting for the parts to arrive, we’re sorting the bricks salvaged from our last kiln, for constructing the next kiln.  There are so many that just counting them at this point would be a formidable task.  We are cleaning away old mortar with an air chipper and wire brushes, so that the bricks will fit together properly when used again.  This is tedious work and it requires concentration; at the end of the day we’re cold and covered with dust.  Now that we’re midway between winter and spring, the weather is unpredictable, which is not helpful.  For the last several months almost all of my time has been spent in my office, sitting before a computer monitor, so it feels very good to work outside again.  Every brick we clean brings us a step closer toward returning to work as potters.

Owing to the resilience of the Japanese people, much progress has been made to undo the damage caused by The Great Earthquake of March 11, 2011.   For so many residents in the most strongly affected areas, however, the effects of the tragedy are still painfully present.  A lot of time, money, physical effort and patience are the minimum requirements to make the catastrophe a thing of the past in the minds of the people living in the Tohoku region, nearest to the earthquake epicenter.

被害の酷かった地区の一つに宮城県の気仙沼があります。この地は漁港として日本ではその名が知られており日本の食を支えている所です。しかし震災後の大津波により大きなダメージを受けました。港の形が変わったほどでした。停泊していた漁船の燃料は引火して何日も暗い空の日が続いたのです。そして港を取り巻く漁港関係のビジネス諸共、津波は飲み込んでいったのです。

One location most known for having incurred terrible damage is Kesennuma, in Miyagi Prefecture.  The tidal wave that followed the earthquake flattened the seaport, and in fact changed its topography! Fuel for the fishing boats ignited, and smoke blackened the sky for four days.  Besides the loss of many fishing boats, many of the facilities that support the fishing industry were swept away.

しばらく前に、私の友人は気仙沼で作られたハンモックをプレゼントしてくれました。気仙沼の漁師さんは大変なご苦労をされ、震災前のような仕事もできず収入源も不安定な状態です。漁師の方達は負けじとアイデアを出し、漁にはかかせない魚を獲る網を編む技術を生かして丈夫なハンモックを作りあげ、販売し収入源にしているそうです。そして一日でも早く海に戻れるよう、ハンモックを売り収入に繋がるよう頑張っているそうです。

A few weeks ago a friend presented me with a nylon hammock, made in Kesennuma.  I was told that until the area’s fishing industry becomes functional again, the fishermen have almost no work or independent means of income.  As a stopgap measure, many of them are now applying their skill in weaving fishing net toward producing strong hammocks.  Sales from these products will help them survive until they can return to the sea.

気仙沼漁師のハンモックは乗るととても心地よく、体のラインに沿うようになってます。しっかりと編み込んであるので、丈夫で長く楽しめると思います。ハンモックを楽しむ為には４〜５m開いた両側に木か柱が必要です。

Kasennuma hammocks are comfortable, and conform to the shape of the body as soon as they are gotten into.   They will last many years if treated with care.  They need a four to five meter space between two strong posts or trees for hanging.

Unfortunately, the person in Kesennuma in charge of sales does not understand English, and for various other reasons it’s probably not practical to order this product from overseas.  Nevertheless, I very much hope that the Japanese version of this blog entry will bring some much needed support to the fishermen of Kesennuma.

アケビは韓国と日本、中国に古来からある植物です。中の白い部分の実は種がぎっしりで甘く果物として、紫色の奇麗な外皮は煮たり、天ぷらなど野菜として食されています。アケビのつるはとても強く、手持ちカゴやバスケット、ティーポットの取っ手としても使われてます。

Akebia trifoliata is native to China, Korea and Japan.
The interior seed sack is sweet, so it’s eaten raw as a fruit, but the fleshy outer cover can be fried or simmered like a vegetable.
The akebi vine is very strong after it has been dried, and is often used to make durable baskets and teapot handles.

日本の場合台風は南海上で発生し少しずつ北上していき、南に住んでいる人達はまだ発生間もない台風の影響をもろに受ける事になります。通常、東京くらいの緯度に進む前に急激に勢力は弱くなり東よりに進路を変えて、太平洋の台風の進路上に浮かんでいる不運な船以外は大きな被害にはなりません。
In Japan, it’s usually the people living in the southernmost areas who have the most to fear from these tropical cyclones as they move northward.  By the time the storms reach approximately the same latitude as Tokyo, they have usually expended most of their strength and have veered eastward toward the central Pacific ocean, where they can cause little harm except to unlucky ships that are out at sea.

今回の台風１５号（ニックネーム　“ロケ”）は勢力が弱くならないまま関東に接近してきました。コースは北東、そして本州のど真ん中を通りました。豪雨と強風を保ちながら益子町の真上を通過していきました。他の地方では１６名が犠牲となりました。しかし、私の知る限り益子地区は収穫前の稲や木々が倒され、枝から大量の葉が落ちただけでした。
This typhoon, nicknamed Roke, was extraordinary in terms of its strength and longevity.  It traveled in a northeasterly direction, the path of which carried it squarely up the center of much of Honshu.  This typhoon passed directly over Mashiko, carrying rain and dangerously high winds.
About sixteen people lost their lives in other areas during this storm, but so far as I know, in Mashiko nothing happened except for toppled rice plants, fallen trees and branches, and leaves strewn everywhere.

私たちの地域は夕方頃が一番のピークでした。夜の間聞こえるのは、強風で木と木がこすれる音と豪雨が屋根に叩き付ける音でした。その結果私達の庭はめちゃくちゃになり、強い風と雨の影響で外にあったコンパネはボロ布のようになっていました。
In our area the weather was the most intense in the late afternoon.  All night we heard the sound of heavy rain, and the wind hissing as it passed through our large trees, making a mess of our garden.  A piece of plywood I had left outside was completely shredded by the wind and water.

夜が明ける前に台風は過ぎ去りました。そして庭には虫の音が響いてました。空には青空が戻り、白く輝く三日月が見えました。
By dawn the storm had passed, and in our garden the insects that are active at this time of year were chirping away as usual.  The sky had begun to clear, revealing a bright crescent moon.

早朝に近くの小貝川へ様子を見に行きました。昨夜の豪雨で普段より水位が上昇し川幅が広くなってました。しかし、これでも台風が過ぎた時点で水位は下がったようです。私が写真を撮りに行った時は、まだ水位は高いレベルで流れは濁流と化してました。
In the morning I drove to the local river, Kokaigawa.   During the night it had risen above its normal storm levels, but receded somewhat as Roke moved on.   By the time I was there to photograph it, it was still higher than usual, and the current was still impressively strong.

台風１５号（ロケ）は夏も一緒に連れ去ったようです。太陽の光は秋の日差しに変わったのです。でも暦の上では秋なので当たり前ですね！
As Roke blew away, it seems as if it took Summer with it.  The quality of light is different now, more like that of autumn.   But of course that is the season we’re now officially in!

最後の片付け場所は最大の難所の窯場。窯場の建物の中には２７年間使用した愛着のあった崩壊した窯の他に石でできた重い棚板が数十枚、釉薬の入ったままの多数のバケツ、棚板をサポートする大小様々のズクが何百個、多くの工具類、捨てるのはもったいないと思いつつ長年そのままにしていた煉瓦、埃だらけの釣り具（亡き祖父の物）そして何年も乗っていない愛車のオートバイが２台あります。そして窯場の片付けを始めて２日後には崩れた窯だけになっていました。
The last room to be cleaned up was the kiln shed.  Contained within, besides my poor destroyed kiln, were refractory shelves, buckets of unused glaze, stacking posts, hand tools, piles of broken bricks that I always hated for some reason to throw away, dusty fishing gear (including a reel that belonged to my grandfather) and two motorcycles that had been covered with tarps for years.  After two days, almost everything was removed from the shed except for the remains of my kiln.

鉄製の枠にロットで締められた２８２個の煉瓦の天井の総重量は約５００㎏あります。崩れた窯の一番上にはその５００㎏が乗っておりとても不安定な状態です。なるべく使える煉瓦を温存するため注意を払って解体しなくてはなりません。まず崩れた窯の中にある煉瓦を拾わなければならず、長い棒状の物を使い手繰り寄せて行きます。あの５００㎏の下に入り込んで煉瓦を拾うにはかなりの度胸が必要であり、作業中に天井が落ちたら虫のごとく潰されるのは誰が見ても想像がつく事でしょう。
The flat roof, made of 282 firebrick, bound together with steel rod, weighed about 500 kilo, or 1100 lbs.  It sat precariously on three nearly collapsed walls.  I used a broom on a long stick to pull the fallen bricks out from inside the kiln.  Anyone might easily understand my hesitation to step under that roof.  If it came down on me I would have been squashed like a bug.

近所には適任の職人さんがおり、とても有り難い事にダンプカーに沢山の道具類を積んで快く手伝いに来てくれました。その本格的な道具の山を見て心強く、またうらやましく思いました。彼の手際の良さに驚き、あっという間にその５００㎏の天井は４つのチェーンブロックによって吊り上げられました。その間に、今にも崩れそうな壁を一つずつ取り除き、そして２７年ぶりに天井は地上に置かれ全てバラされました。これで使える煉瓦は再建の時にリサイクルする事が出来ます。
One of my neighbors possesses an impressive array of skills and a lot of big toys.  Thankfully, he came to my kiln shed with his dump truck, four chain blocks, and an assortment of hand tools that I immediately coveted.   Within an amazingly short period of time he had that heavy kiln roof suspended under the steel rafters of the shed.  Following the safe removal of the wall bricks, the roof returned to earth for the first time in twenty-seven years, and was disassembled.  The bricks that are unbroken will be recycled when I build my next kiln.
