２０１０も終わり！ The End of 2010!

今年最後の朝は、昨夜の雪の影響で薄暗く極寒でした、でも冬だから当たり前です。それでも冬至は過ぎて、少しずつ昼間の長さは伸びてます。これから３ヶ月後には庭に緑が戻ってきます！
The last morning of this year is a dreary one, but after all, this is Winter! At least the solstice is behind us, and the hours of daylight have begun to lengthen. In only three months the greenery will begin to return to our garden!
今年も沢山のお客様に出会い、友達に助けて頂き感謝申し上げます。
私と妻から、皆様の２０１１年の繁栄と平和、健康をご祈願すると共に、変わらぬご愛顧をよろしくお願いいたします。

２０１０第三回ホームエキシビジョンにお越し下さりましたお客様に心から感謝申し上げます！
今回、初めてヤング陶房を訪れて頂きましたお客様、前からご贔屓頂いているお客様に深く感謝申し上げます。

I’m very happy to have made acquaintance during our event with first time visitors to my workshop, and I’m equally as appreciative to friends who have supported us on prior occasions!
今年で三回目になる外庭でのイベント、開催前には必ず同じ事が心配になります。それは会期中のお天気です。この時期になると１日に１５回以上天気予報をチェックします。通常１１月は雨の日が少なく快晴の日が多いのが常ですが、残念な事に今回はお天気に恵まれませんでした。ある日は朝から土砂降りの雨、気分は最悪でした。それでも嬉しい事に、雨の降らない日は常にお客様はお越し下さいました。
As usually happens before our outdoor events, we must have checked the weather reports fifteen times every day, hoping for clear skies. On the whole it was more cloudy than was to be expected for November, and on one frustrating day, rain fell from morning to night! But as long as it stayed dry, there was no time when guests were not present!
今回のイベントを開催するにあたり、イベントまでの少ない日数にも関わらず普段よりも倍以上作品を制作しました。デザインや、釉薬として、お客様に沢山の作品を紹介したくベストを尽くしました。イベント初日（２０日）の夜に最後の窯出しを行いました。今回イベントの為に２回の窯焚きをしましたが、最後の頃は精神的、肉体的に限界を超えておりとてもキツイ状態でした。しかしそんな中の窯焚きの結果は予想以上に質の高い物が沢山出たのです。今回の状況で思った事は、何事も根気よく、粘り強く行えば必ず報われるという事です。
I produced almost twice as much ware than usual in the amount of time available to me before the event began. I took some chances with forms and glazes, hoping to show our guests something new. My last kiln load of pottery was unloaded in the evening of the first day. Toward the end of production, I was physically and mentally fatigued, and the two firings that I did were difficult, but the quality of the ware that came out of my kiln was extraordinary, in my opinion. It would seem that sometimes persistence brings rewards.
イベントの準備に追われ、その他の仕事がそのまま残っておりますが、２０１０年の大きな仕事は基本的に終わりました。今の私は解放され、今まで出来なかった寝坊、好きな読書、そして妻とゆっくりとした時間を過ごす事が出来ます。
そして、年末までに（a)海釣り(b)オートバイの修理が出来る事を願っている毎日です。
My work for 2010 is essentially finished, except for the long neglected errands that I must now attend to. For now at least, I can catch up on lost sleep, do some reading, and spend some quality time with my wife.
Before the end of this year I’ll be very grateful if I can (a) do some ocean fishing and (b)begin restoring my motorcycle!

今年も第3回Home Exhibitionを開催いたします。
ご多忙中とは存じますが、深秋の景色と器の融合をお楽しみ頂きますようご案内申し上げます。

20日、21日いずれか雨天時の場合、翌週の土日いずれかに振替開場いたします。雨天時も開場しておりますが、外庭の展示由え、まずはお電話にてご確認ください。

In November, our third Home exhibition will take place, once again in our large garden. My ceramic work will be displayed under a blue sky, hopefully when the fall colors are at their peak!

11:00 AM → 5:00 PM (4:00 PM on the last day)
Place: Harvey Young Pottery, Mashiko, Tochigi-ken
In case of rain on either the 20th (Sat) or 21st (Sun), the event will be extended to the next weekend.
(Rain or no rain, we’ll remain open and do our best, but please telephone before coming, just to be sure!)
We’ll be very happy if you can find time to visit us, and enjoy the beauty of Mashiko in Autumn!

解き放たれる瞬間 DECOMPRESSION

私は、日本の本州、山にぐるりと囲まれた栃木県に住んでいる為か、島国に住んでいるという実感がありません。一番近い海沿いに行くには車で一時間以上走らせないと行く事が出来ないのです。
この世に生まれアメリカに住んでいた時には、必ず近くに海がありました。
イベント前の長い作陶期間が続いた後、暫し海を見に出かけると心が落ち着きます。
海に行く途中に茨城県大洗水族館があり、オフシーズンの静かな時を見計らって立ち寄る事があります。
水槽の中の魚達はのんびりとした生活をしていると思います。餌は時間通りに必要な分与えられている為なのか、動物特有の弱肉強食の世界はそこには存在しません。
水槽の中の魚達が、優雅に泳いでいる様子をずっと見ていると心が和らぎます。
魚でも感情表現する事は当たり前だと思います。水槽の中で、大きな魚に追いかけられた瞬きをしない魚の目だけを見ると慌てている様子はさほど感じませんが、凄いスピードで逃げる様はパニック状態そのものです。周りには、水槽にカメラをよせフラッシュをたいて撮影している方もいました。優雅に泳いでいる魚達はビックリするのでそれは良いアイデアでは無いと思います。
Honshu, where I live, is an island, albeit a very large one, but it’s hard to remember that I’m surrounded by ocean, since Tochigi Prefecture is landlocked. We have to drive more than an hour in order to reach the closest shore.
A large part of my life has been spent living near the sea. Returning to it after a long work stint always brings me relief, relaxation.
We sometimes visit the fine public marine aquarium at Oarai, a seaport in Ibaraki Prefecture. We always go during off-season, to avoid crowds.
The fish that live in marine aquariums are obviously in captivity, but despite this fact they seem to have relaxed lives. They’re fed regularly, which I suppose lessens the tendency for them to eat each other. Watching them swim languidly around in their tanks has a very soothing effect upon me.
It’s widely accepted that even fish have a range of emotions. But unless we see them darting around in a panic, it’s hard to gauge their feelings from looking at their unblinking eyes.
It’s probably not a good idea to use a flash when photographing fish through the tank windows. I would guess that the sudden glare really frightens them.

猛暑だった今年の夏。まだ暑さは残るものの、何となく秋の気配も感じるようになりました。２００８年に初めて日本橋高島屋にて発表の場をいただき、おかげさまで２回目を迎える事となりました。秋冬の季節にお使い頂きたい普段使いの食器や、秋の野花など生ける花器、前回ご好評いただいております斜森博行氏とのコラボレーションステンドグラスランプなどを展示いたします。近くにお越しの際、お気軽に足をお運び下さい。

HARVEY YOUNG POTTERY EXHIBITION

TAKASHIMAYA DEPARTMENT STORE, NIHONBASHI, TOKYO

In 2008, I had the opportunity to display my work at Nihonbashi Takashimaya Department Store for the first time. My second show at the same venue will take place this September.
The unusual heat of the Japanese summer still remains, but we sense that the advent of autumn is imminent. Reflecting the coming change of seasons, my exhibition will feature ceramic tableware and flower vases made for use during fall and winter. Also on display will be stoneware and stained glass lamps made in collaboration between myself and Mr. Hiroyuki Nanamori.
I have spent all summer preparing for this event, and would be very grateful if you can find some time to visit Takashimaya Department Store to see the result of my efforts.

涼しい場所 Summer Shade

ヤング陶房のシンボルである大きな山桜の木は５０人居てもすっぽり収まる位の大きさです。
木々達は私の仕事場（陶房）を一番暑いお昼過ぎでも涼しくしてくれています。
そしてその木は数えられない虫達の憩いの場になってます。しかし、虫達を確認する事は出来ません。
虫達は朝から晩まで、夏のセレナーデを奏でています。
One Mountain Cherry tree is the largest in my garden, and provides enough shade to protect fifty people in summer.
It even keeps my workshop cool until mid-afternoon.
It’s a hotel for more insects than anyone could count, and most of them are always hidden from view.
In this hot season they serenade me from early morning until late at night.
アマニタ ヘミバファ
Amanita hemibapha
食べられる茸らしいが、それよりも嬉しいのは希少なきのこに遭遇できた事です。
Said to be edible, in fact it’s highly regarded.
しかし、きのこについて無知な私たちは、食べるより観賞した方が良さそうです。
Mushroom novices had better just look, rather than eat!

益子町の５月の気候といえば、適度な温度と湿度で、とても過ごし易くこの季節の庭でのイベントは気持ちよくお客様も喜んでくれるだろうと、今回のガーデンリサイタルを思い経ちました。
May is not a particularly dry month in the area where Mashiko is situated, but the temperature is nearly ideal, so we took a chance in scheduling a music event for that time in our large garden.
アウトドアでのイベントで最初に頭を過る事は、当日のお天気の事です。リサイタル当日（５月２２、２３日）が近くなる度に天気予報をチェックする回数も多くなり、そして私たちの心配が現実の事になる確率が高いと知った時は私たちのストレスレベルも最高潮に達してました。リサイタル前日ともなると、天気予報を２０回以上、チェックしてました。
When we plan an outdoor gathering, naturally our biggest worry almost always concerns how much the weather will cooperate. So after the plans for our Spring Recital event were set, and as the scheduled weekend (May 22/23) approached, our stress levels increased in proportion to the weather service’s ever decreasing optimism over the possibility of fair skies on both days. On Friday I must have checked the weather website twenty times for the weekend’s prediction.
２２日（土曜日）、空は気持ちよく晴れて申し分の無いお天気でした。ビブラフォン＆ギターのリサイタルを楽しもうと沢山のお客様は足を運んでくださいました。若草の薫りのする風は心地よく、サンサンと降り注ぐ５月の強烈な直射日光は庭の大きな山桜が、お客様とミュージシャンに心地よい木陰を提供してくれました。
On Saturday we were lucky, because the sky was clear and the temperature was perfect for an outdoor event. A fair number of guests arrived for Ms. Maiko Usui’s fine one hour vibraphone recital, accompanied on guitar by Mr. Ryo Hangai. There was a cool breeze, and our large trees provided enough shade for all of our friends.
２３日（日曜日）、私たちの祈りも届かず午前中からの雨。２日目のリサイタルは前日の予報を見て９９％諦めておりましたが、三味線奏者の岡安喜代八、喜代洋先生は、『雨が降ってもヤングご夫妻に聞かせたいから伺います！』の言葉を頂きました。急遽、自宅の中で、三味線リサイタルを行う事になったのです。悪天候なのでお客様もお越しにならないだろう、と思いましたが予想は見事外れて、２６年前に建てたこの家始まって以来、最悪床が抜けてしまうのではないか？と心配が頭をかすめるほどお客様で寿司詰め状態になりました。
私の息子は、人で埋もれた身動きの取れない部屋で何とかリサイタルの撮影をしてました。
２日間、お世話になったミュージシャンは、私たちスタッフとお越し頂いたお客様に心に残る素敵な音楽を残していかれました。そして私たちとお客様は、彼らにありったけの喝采を贈りました。きっと、ミュージシャン達は、その気持ちを受け止めてくれたと思います。
No amount of wishful thinking could stop the rain that began at noon the following day. We were prepared to cancel the shamisen perfomance by Mr. Kiyohachi Okayasu and his apprentice, Ms. Kiyohiro Okayasu, but the musicians were determined to play for us, so their recital took place inside our house, for the sake of protecting their instruments. For the first time in twenty-six years, there were so many people in the building that I thought the floor joists might break. My son’s video recording was shot from the stair room, in which he was trapped! Despite the wet weather and the cramped conditions, the musicians played wonderfully, and our guests were thrilled!
そして私たちは、大いに楽しみ、ミュージシャンに敬意を表したお客様に、改めて感謝いたします。そしてまたこのチャンスが訪れる事を待ち望んでおります。
My wife Yukie and I are most grateful to the musicians for traveling a great distance on both days to play for our guests. Thanks also to our guests for coming to our home, and for giving the musicians a great reception.
